What Causes Bathtub Clogs?
Similar to toilet and sink clogs, bathtub and shower clogs are typically completely avoidable. Usually, tub clogs are due to soap scum, hair, and hard water deposits. For simple clogs due to hair and soap scum, you can usually take care of this yourself using a bended wire hanger to free the waste from the drain. Hard water deposits are trickier to resolve and tends to require the use of water softeners which can pose a risk if not used properly. If you are unable to fix your clogged tub with a wire hanger, call Plugged Pipes and we will send someone out immediately to repair the clog fast.
If you are sure your bathtub clog is due to hair and soap, you can also try plunging the clog as well. Follow the steps below to unclog your tub using a plunger:
- Fill the tub with enough water to cover the rim of the plunger.
- Put plunger over drain.
- Quickly plunge the drain multiple times.
- Lift plunger to check if drain is clearing.
- Repeat steps three and four until drain is clear.
If after you try to plunge your bathtub, the drain still does not clear, call Plugged Pipes to take care of the clog for you.
How can I prevent Bathtub Clogs?
There are several things you can do to maintain clear bathtub drains including;
- Putting hair strainers over all drains.
- Refrain from dropping pieces of soap down the drain.
- Pour boiling water down drains biweekly.
- Pour equal parts baking soda and vinegar down drains, then follow with hot water monthly.
